Outdoor cinema and ice rink in final plans for Filton Airfield arena
YTL has submitted final detailed plans for the proposed Bristol Arena – and they reveal the venue will feature an outdoor cinema, Christmas ice rink and sports courts. Artist’s impressions include huge public squares in front of the refurbished Brabazon hangars on the former Filton Airfield site. The projected opening date for the arena complex is late 2026 at the earliest.

Councillors approve plans to demolish Concorde pub and replace with student flats
A former pub in Filton looks likely to be bulldozed and replaced with a five-storey block of student flats after councillors unanimously granted planning permission. South Glos Council’s Development Management Committee approved the demolition of the vacant Bristol Concorde (Brewers Fayre) pub, which will be replaced with 99 student beds for UWE.

Two more large HMOs approved in Filton despite neighbours’ objections
Councillors have unanimously approved yet another two large houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) in Filton despite fierce local opposition. The town’s residents are “bearing the brunt” of new bedsits as more and more family homes are turned into shared accommodation, largely for students, a planning committee was told.

Plans submitted to build student accommodation block on Filton Central Garage site
A property developer has submitted plans to demolish the existing buildings at the Filton Central Garage site and replace them with a three-storey accommodation block providing 71 student bedsits. The ‘front’ aspect of the development would face onto Rectory Lane, with the ‘rear’ backing onto the existing Toolstation store and the A38 Gloucester Road North beyond.

North Filton Station gains fast-tracked approval from South Glos planners
South Gloucestershire Council has granted planning permission for the new North Filton Station, which will connect rail services to the new community, known as ‘Brabazon’, being developed on the former Filton Airfield site, as well as visitors to the new YTL Arena Bristol. It is hoped the station will be complete by 2026, allowing an hourly service to on the Henbury Link.

Filton Airfield arena delayed (again) but capacity upped
The boss of the firm behind the planned arena complex on the former Filton Airfield site has admitted that the venue may now not open until 2026, representing a slippage of two years on the last announced date. However, improved design work has created the opportunity to increase the maximum capacity of the arena from 17,000 to 19,000, with over 2,000 “premium seats”.

Railway station serving Filton Airfield arena delayed by three years
A planned train station by the new arena in Filton will not open until 2026 after delays were blamed on several design changes. North Filton Station was initially due to open next year (2023), before the YTL Arena opens in 2024, as a key part of the transport plan to get people to concerts.

Airbus’ early careers recruitment nears pre-pandemic records
Airbus’ UK sites in Filton and Broughton have welcomed their largest number of apprentices and graduates since the end of the pandemic. Airbus in Filton recently welcomed 71 new recruits to the company’s graduate programme, along with a further 68 apprentices. These are in addition to the 69 interns who started their year-long UK industry placement in July.
