The function and form of Conygre House has been changing since its origins as a farmhouse in the seventeenth century. It was bought by the local district council in 1948 and has seen a range of local authority uses since then including operating a a ‘labour exchange’ in the seventies, as a local housing office and as the headquarters of Merlin Housing Society who took over the homes formerly owned by South Gloucestershire Council under a voluntary transfer from 2007. Merlin Housing moved out in 2009 since when the property has been unoccupied.

Campaigners trying to save a historic building in Bristol are about to have talks with council leaders over the future of the premises. Conygre House in Filton is owned by South Gloucestershire Council and in 2005 was one of a number of properties the authority said it wanted to dispose of to help fund new offices in Yate.

It certainly must be discouraging to Filton residents in the Conygre area to know that their cherished Conygre House – reportedly Filton’s oldest building – is on the market to be sold. Owned by South Gloucestershire Council – previously Northavon – it remains to those who live there as its only public accessible building with a sizeable garden space.
