Filton’s Shield Retail Centre has been granted permission to expand by planning officials at South Gloucestershire Council.
The owners of the centre want to construct a new retail building on land north-east of the current site that is currently used as an overflow car park.
Part of the land in question, behind the row of units that includes the Bath Store, is currently enclosed by a metal fence and used for temporary parking.
The applicant says the design of the proposed unit has been constrained by the presence of underground electricity cables that run across the site from the junction of Link Road and Station Road to a Western Power Distribution substation beyond the northern boundary of the site.
The metal-clad building will be divided into two separate retail units although the Council says it would be acceptable for these to be merged at a future date.
Access to the new units will be via the existing road between the Bath Store and Majestic Wine.
The new development will provide 93 car parking spaces, replacing the 57 spaces currently available.
