Olympic Torch to visit Filton in May

London 2012 Olympics

The London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay is to visit a small part of Filton as part of its 70-day national tour.

On Wednesday 23rd May, the torch will be carried between Bristol and Chippenham and Filton residents will have a chance to cheer it on as it covers a short stretch of Southmead Road.

The torch is due to pass over the Clifton Suspension Bridge at around 8am, from where it will pass over The Downs and through Henleaze before heading up Southmead Road.

Torch bearers will carry the flame as far as the junction with Charborough Road, where it is expected to arrive at 9:05am.

The torch will then head on “in convoy” towards Chippenham, where it is due to arrive at 9:46am.

Other parts of South Gloucestershire will be visited a day earlier, on Tuesday 22nd May, when the torch passes through Bitton, Longwell Green and Hanham on its way between Bath and Bristol.

Leader of South Gloucestershire Council, Cllr John Calway, said:

“This is an excellent opportunity for our residents and those in the surrounding communities to see the Olympic Flame and witness the spectacle of the Olympic Torch Relay. By passing through our high streets and alongside local shops, it really does bring the route to life and we are encouraging local residents to get involved by decorating their houses and coming out to welcome the torchbearers. This will be an historic day to treasure for individuals, young and old.”
