Olympic torchbearer Malcolm Carr from Thornbury paid a visit to Filton Hill Primary School last week.
He was at the school to give excited children a closer glimpse of one of the torches used to carry the Olympic flame on its epic journey from Greece ahead of the London 2012 Games.
Malcolm, 59, was one of the first torchbearers to take the flame as it left South Gloucestershire on Tuesday 22nd May after thousands lined the streets through Bitton, Longwell Green and Hanham. His moment to shine came at approximately 6pm when he carried it along Nags Head Hill in Bristol, between Jockey Lane and Hillside Road.
Nominated by Lloyds TSB, his form stated: “Malcolm has been playing for Thornbury Town Football Club since 1980 and held various roles at the club including first team captain, secretary, treasurer and vice chairman. Every week he helps with training and assists the younger players in developing their skills and increasing their fitness. He is also now club physio and stands on the sidelines every week to treat injuries and to offer advice to players. As the longest serving member of the club, his commitment is an inspiration to the younger players. He has also recently taken up running and has completed the London Marathon twice, raising much needed funds for DreamFlight.”
Speaking about his once-in-a-lifetime experience, Malcolm said:
“It’s been wonderful. The day of the relay was amazing, especially with the huge crowds cheering me on. I have been amazed by the interest generated afterwards as well, especially by the children who want to hold the torch. It seems to have grabbed everyone’s imagination.”
He will also be visiting Charborough Road Primary School and Christ Church CofE Primary School in Hanham next month.
